Introduction

The China Society on Tibet Plateau (CSTP), led by the China Association of Science and Technology (CAST), is a national, scholarly and non-profit making organization consisting of scientists and technologists engaged in the research and construction of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is a key social power for prompting and developing science and technology on the Tibetan Plateau. Focusing its research on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, CSTP shall unite and mobilize its members and more science and technology workers, to prompt flourish and development of science and technology, to prompt science popularization and generalization, to prompt personnel pullulation and improving, to prompt the combination between science and technology and economics, to serve the constructions of socialist physic, politic and spirit civilization, to serve all of the members and technicians, to contribute the economic construction and social sustainable development and China socialist modernazations.
Based upon many years of works and rich scientific results, initiated by many famous scientists and supported by multiple aspects including government leaders, as an integrated academic organization, CSTP was founded in March of 1990. It aims at speedily prompting the research of resources, environment and social economic sustainable development and enhancing the academic intercrossing and uniting of different departments.
CSTP votes its leader institution, the council of CSTP every 4 years. Honorary president form the first to the fourth council is Mr. Ngapoi Ngawang Jigmei, now the Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. President of the first and second council is Prof. Liu Tunsheng who is an academician of CAS. President of the third council is Prof. Sun Honglie who is also an academician, and ever served as the member of National People's Congress. Now, the fourth council is undertaking its task from 2003 to 2006. There are more than 1000 members of CSTP at present, who work and live in some tens of provinces, cities and autonomous regions as well as Hongkong special region. Among these members, there are more than 20 are the academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) or Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and more than 80% members owned their senior research positions.
